Keep Your Wood Plane Useful - Sharpen It

Sharpening wood planes freehand is a handy skill and can usually be learned in about two hours. This is a technique learned from a German cabinetmaker.

Drill Bit Sharpener

Remember: if a tool has been sharpened properly and then passed under a bright light, it will show only one glint of light off the secondary bevel. On the other hand, if a tool is sharpened poorly, the bevel will be visible over a range of angles. A different part of the bevel reflects light at each angle.

Drill Bit Sharpener

To sharpen flat blades, such as chisels and planes:

1. Stand side-on to the stone, as if you were preparing to saw something. Flatten the back of blade and press the back down on the stone. Move the blade back and forth in a linear motion. This step shouldn't take very long if the blade has been sharpened properly at another time.

2. Just a quick note regarding this step: place the blade in the middle of the stone, not close to either end. Turn the blade over and lay the primary bevel flat on the stone. Press down using your left fingers, low on the back of the blade. This keeps the bevel on the stone.

3. Use your right middle finger and place it under the blade. At the same time, put your index finger and thumb around the right side of the blade. They should both be pretty straight. Don't grip too tightly, but do hold the blade firmly in position.

4. Plant your right elbow firmly into the top of your pelvic bone. The blade needs to remain stationary on the stone during this move. To this point, you've simply put yourself in position to hone the blade.

5. Now, you'll lift the top of the blade just about 3 to 5mm, or approximately 3/16th of an inch in order to adjust the angle of the attack of the blade in relation to that of the secondary bevel.

6. Make sure your right wrist is solidly locked with the blade in the correct position before beginning the honing process. Your wrist will remain in this position until the blade is removed from the stone.

7. To hone the blade, plant your feet on the ground, and rock your body from the ankles. The first stroke of the blade should move toward you. Remember the instruction to place the blade in the middle of the stone? This is crucial so you have the space to keep the blade flat and in contact with the stone.

8. Use one or two figure eight tracks to even out wear on the stone. One should be on either side of the stone. This will result in a good edge. Five to ten strokes should be enough. To see that the blade is honed evenly, check the reflection from the second bevel.

9. With very light pressure, remove the wire edge from the blade by once again flattening the back of the blade. Gently re-hone the secondary bevel. The wire edge should be gone after repeating this process a few times.

10. ALWAYS strop the blade. The safest way to do this is with a piece of western red cedar soaked in oil, a soft razor strop or a felt wheel (carvers use them). Stropping is the process by which you pull the edge backwards across a stropping medium, which re-forms the edge after removing the wire edge. If the blade pares fibers from the end grain of a piece of pine without signs of marks or tearing, you have a properly sharpened blade.

Knife Sharpening Experts - Forged Knives Vs Stamped Knives

We all agree. If a knife isn't sharp, what's the use, right? The sharpness of the blade will make all the difference in the world. And sharpness is largely dependant upon the quality of the blade material from which the knife is made. You'll need to determine whether or not to get a forged knife or a stamped knife. Let's make it clear.

Drill Bit Sharpener

Stamped Knives. Stamped knives are stamped out of, or cut from, sheets of metal using a template of predetermined size and shape. This process is called precision machining. As most of these stamped knives are generally flat and thin, the process is done quite quickly. But because they are so thin, they aren't that dense and do not hold their edges very long. Unfortunately, this means more frequent sharpening is required by stamped knives than forged knives. As a matter of fact, some stamped knives sets claim that you needn't ever sharpen them. They'll stay sharp for a lifetime, the package will say. Please, don't believe that. All things change over time, including the sharpness of a knife's edge.

Drill Bit Sharpener

The blade of a stamped knife is usually fitted and fastened onto its handle and is not, therefore, thought of as a solid piece of metal. A loose handle could easily result in your having to throw the knife away. Such a waste. It's good to know that not all stamped handles are this way. Some stamped knives have handles that are fitted over the tang.

Stamped knives are also lighter, and have less balance, than forged knives. So you'll have to grip it fairly tightly and have to use much more pressure whenever you use them. Doing so will increase risk of injury.

Advantages: Fairly inexpensive. Lighter in weight.

Disadvantages: Usually unreliable handles. Requires more force, more ork from the user. Increased risk of injury during strenuous jobs. Poorly balanced. Needs frequent sharpening.

Forged Knives. Forged knives are not stamped. They are carefully made with great attention to detail. Steel is heated to extreme temperatures and set in a mold. It is than hammered out to form the blade. As a result, forged knives are denser and heavier than stamped knives and have better balance because of it. And while their tempering process results in a blade of extreme hardness, it is also more flexible. It usually has a nice thick bolster with a tang that is enclosed by the handle and is usually secured with three rivets.

Advantages: Much better balance. More weightier and so is more maneuverable. Metal is stronger and can last many years. Requires less sharpening. Less risk of injury as less work is required from the user. Solid bolster to increase safety. Secured, durable handles.

Disadvantage: Costs more. Weightier. Critical Point. Maybe 10 years ago all of the above would be undisputed. Not so today. There is quite a bit of dissent about the quality of stamped knives and whether or not they rival the quality of forged knives. Here are the popular points:

Some stamped knives are made with a high quality steel to begin with.

Some knives are stamped initially and then followed up with a forging process.

Today's manufacturing process (especially involving heat) can produce stamped knives that are just as good as forged knives, if not better.

Just as good as forged knives, if not better. That's quite amazing. Here's another critical point:

Many prefer a forged knife because of its weight distribution, the resultant ease of maneuverability and the comfort and safety of the bolster.

What's it to be then? It seems fairly easy to decide. If you'd like some strong, long-lasting knives, get forged knives. If you'd like something fairly disposable that you'd prefer not to have to maintain, get stamped knives.

But if you've got the time, the means and the desire, shop around. There are high quality stamped knives out there now. Some have good weight on them, too. They're relatively young on the market, so you're going to have to track them down.

What is a Chainsaw Sharpener?

You must expect any tool that cuts or saws to become dull eventually. This is the case with chain saws as well. If you use your chainsaw frequently you are more likely to notice it is becoming dull. As soon as you notice a difference in cutting ability or a change in the wood chip output you will need to have it sharpened. Be especially careful if you do not use your chain saw frequently, it may be more difficult to notice your saw is dull. A dull chainsaw is much more likely to cause incident or accidents.

Drill Bit Sharpener

So how do you sharpen a dull chain saw? With a chain saw sharpener of course!

Drill Bit Sharpener

What is a Chain Saw Sharpener?

A chain saw sharpener is a machine that sharpens the individual teeth of your chainsaw. They come in a variety of styles from hand held files manual files, attachments for a small drilling tool like a Dremel, to a self contained unit that attaches to a workbench.

Your sharpening machine is comprised of two main components. One component holds on to the chain, and the other part sharpens it. These parts will differ depending on which model or type of chain saw sharpener you own. Some have small grinding bits and others have full grinding wheels.

There is a wide range of grinding wheels and they are proportionate to the size of the chainsaw sharpener you are using. When the chain, which is held in place by a securing lever, is ready to be sharpened the grinding wheel is lowered on to the edge of the tooth. If you are using a dremel tip it will not be secured in such a way but a piece is provided to keep the angle you are sharpening correct.

So basically on a little bit larger scale it is the same process you see any good chef go through with a knife. You grind the teeth of the chain back to a point using a grinding wheel. A chain saw being a little larger than a chef's knife it is mounted and run by electricity, but the idea is the same.

How to Build Your Own Kegerator

If you like the idea of enjoying cold draft beer in the comfort of your own home, but buying a new kegerator is not in your budget, don't despair. For a fraction of the cost of a new kegerator, you can build your own. Building your own kegerator can be accomplished some with basic household tools, and just a minor amount of do-it-yourself skills. On a do-it-yourself difficulty scale of 1 to 10, this job is about a 2. Your homemade kegerator can easily be completed in about an hour.

Drill Bit Sharpener

The first thing you need to do is get a refrigerator. Used refrigerators can often be found for little or no cost. Depending upon how much room you have for your kegerator, and how much beer you'd like it to hold, you could either go with an upright (kitchen style) refrigerator, or a mini fridge. Obviously, an upright will provide you more space for beer, other drinks, mixers, food, and ice. The benefits of the mini fridge style are space savings and energy savings. If you choose to go with a mini fridge, measure the interior dimensions of the unit to make sure it is big enough to hold a keg with a coupler on top of it, and a 5 or 10lb CO2 bottle with pressure regulator. Some mini fridges are too small to be used as kegerators. Below are the dimensions of commonly used kegs:

Drill Bit Sharpener

Beverage, or Cornelius Keg: (popular among home brewers) 25" tall, 8.5" diameter - holds 53 12oz servings of beer 1/6 Barrel: 23.3" tall, 9.25" diameter - holds 55 servings 1/4 Barrel, or pony keg: (comes in two sizes) Short measures 14.8" tall by 17" diameter. Slim measures 23.3" tall by 11". - Both hold 82 beers. 1/2 Barrel: 23.3" tall, 17" diameter - serves 165 12oz beers.

Once you've selected the appropriate refrigerator, you'll need to choose your kegerator kit. All of the parts included in these kits can be purchased separately, but we highly recommend using a kegerator kit, rather than buying individual parts. First of all, the kits generally save you a few dollars, and secondly you'll have everything you need, and it will all be compatible. As an extra bonus, most kits come with detailed instructions specific to building a kegerator using the parts enclosed, as well as any necessary specialty tools. When choosing your kegerator kit, you'll need to decide how many taps you want (i.e. how many different types of beer you want to serve at once) and if you want a basic kit, or one with more bells and whistles.

Next, assemble the tools necessary to build your kegerator. Even though the kegerator kits typically include any specialty tools that are needed, you will need a few basic household tools. You'll need the following tools to complete the job:

Electric Drill 1/8" drill bit 1", 2" and 3" hole saws Flat and Philips head screwdrivers Needle nose pliers Adjustable wrench Level

Now that you have everything you need for your home made kegerator, it's time to get to work. Remove all of the shelves from the refrigerator and thoroughly clean the inside. Check the floor of the refrigerator for level. If it is not, you need to build up the floor to make it flat and level. This can easily be done with some plywood, 2x2s, and a few shims.

Drilling a hole for the tap

If you are building a mini fridge style of kegerator, you need to decide if you're going to have a top mounted, tower style tap, or are you going to mount the tap in the door. If you're building a top mounted tap, you should remove the interior plastic top panel to expose all of the coolant lines. You need to be very careful not to damage to refrigerator's coolant lines, or you will have to start over with a new fridge. If you are building an upright style of kegerator, the tap will be drilled through the door, which has no coolant lines, so this is not a concern.

If you're building an upright kegerator conversion, mark a point (or points) on the outside of the door where you would like to place the tap(s). Make sure that the spigots will be elevated enough to clear the keg and coupler, and that they are centered. Drill a 1/8" pilot hole for the shank holes. Make sure that this hole goes all the way through the door. Once you have your pilot hole, drill a 1" shank hole in the outside of the door for the faucet, using your drill and the 1" hole saw. Drill a larger 2" or 3" hole on the inside of the door, using one of the larger-bore hole saws. Fit your shank into the door with the flange against the outside, and the nut tightened onto the inside of the outer panel of the door. (The larger hole on the inside allows access so you can tighten the shank nut.) If you're building a mini fridge kegerator, do the same thing to the top of the unit, being very careful not to damage the coolant lines.

Assembly

Installing a drip tray in either kegerator style is simple. For a regular size kegerator, use the drip-tray mounting bracket to mark out the mounting holes and drill them in the door. For a tower style mini-fridge, we recommend a self-contained spill tray that is manually emptied.

We recommend that you buy a beer line cleaning kit, and thoroughly clean all the beer lines before hooking them up. Then hook up the beer and gas lines, flush them and sanitize them again. Prior to pressurizing the system, make sure that all hose clamps are tightened, that the CO2 tank is secured, and the temperature in your kegerator is between 33 and 38 degrees. After you have hooked up your keg and pressurized the system, start out at 13psi as a pressure setting, and adjust from there to achieve proper carbonation level for your beer. If the beer pours with too much head, lower the pressure. If it comes out of the tap slowly, or appears flat, raise the pressure.

The final step is to relax with a fresh draft beer, and think about all the money you saved by building your own kegerator.

Chainsaw Safety Tips

Chainsaws can be very useful for clearing large limbs or dead trees. They are powerful handtools that can cause a great deal of damage if they are not treated with respect, however. It is important to follow all of the safety rules that are included in a chainsaw's operating guide. Users should also wear protective gear that includes safety goggles, gloves, long pants, and thickly sleeved shirts. It is possible for a chainsaw to kick back and cut into the user at any time, so the user needs to be prepared to minimize the damage if that should happen.

Drill Bit Sharpener

Always Create a Sturdy Base

Drill Bit Sharpener

Before beginning to cut into a piece of wood, make sure that the wood is completely stabilized. A chainsaw blade creates a pulling motion because it is rotating at such a high velocity. If the cutting surface is not entirely stable it is very possible that it will shake loose and fly toward the operator. The best way to configure the cutting surface is to brace it between two frames if it is not still attached to the tree. Limbs that are attached to the tree should be braced so that they will not whip back or fall on the person operating the saw.

Keep Chainsaw Angled Away From the Body

Never cut anything with the chainsaw blade angled toward any body part. Sometimes the blade will cut through a limb remarkably fast, which creates the possibility of the blade continuing to cut through the air in a straight line. If a leg, arm, hand or other body part is in the line of the blade it could be seriously injured very quickly. Keeping the blade angled away from the body also protects the user against possible jumps and kick backs that may occur during the cutting process. Gas powered chainsaws use quite a bit of power to drive their chains. That power is generally stronger than the average user can handle when the saw begins to work in an unexpected direction. If the user does it right, the saw should fly into thin air if it gets out of control for a moment.

Never Disengage Safety Mechanisms

Most chainsaws are equipped with several different mechanisms designed to make the tools safer. These mechanisms can become frustrating because they can get in the way of the saw's maneuverability. Never, under any circumstances, remove the safety mechanisms. Work to find a way to cut the materials without altering the saw in any way. The tool has been balanced and designed to operate at its best with the safety gear in place.

When sharpening knives, stones are usually used but it is also possible to make use of a ceramic material that is very dense like that of the ceramic knife sharpener. The construction of the sharpener is much better in comparison to stones and it doesn't wear out easily as well. It is also rust resistant.

Drill Bit Sharpener

The material used in the sharpener is glass-hard but it is still abrasive. This makes the ceramic sharpener a superior appliance. Over time, the ceramic will also darken with regular use. You have to make sure that the machine and the knife is dry before using it.

Drill Bit Sharpener

The machines are usually in bar or rod form. Using the sharpener is easy. You have to hold the knife in one hand and the other hand on the machine. Hold the knife that you want to sharpen at a 20Ëš to 25Ëš angle and make a downward slicing motion. Some models are available in angle type and pull through. Choose the best option that works for you so that you can finish sharpening the edges quickly.

Here are the top three choices when it comes to ceramic knife sharpener:

1. MAC brand Ceramic Knife Sharpener #SR85

Wet Stones For Sharpening Knives

One of the trickiest things to do for anyone looking to explore other aspects of being a handy man would be sharpening knife. This is especially true if you are a bit threatened by by sharp objects. We are all aware how almost any sharp object can give us cuts. Especially while handling a knife. Maybe this is the reason why most people find sharpening knives a bit of task to do. Hiring a professional is almost always your first and last choice, rather try it yourself. It doesn't matter if you put out a little bit more money to get a your knives professionally sharpened. Have you ever even thought of buying an electric knife sharpener at all?

Drill Bit Sharpener

This isn't really that hard of a task. A little written advice and some practice with a small dull knife will prove to you that you can do this on your own. The most common method of sharpening a knife is by using a wet stone. And you'd probably be surprised how relaxing this could be once you've gotten the hang of it. After which, you may just appreciate this new found skill and learn how to safely handle any kind of knife.

Drill Bit Sharpener

There are so many types of wet stones and these are composed of different materials. Japanese water stones are very popular and possible the most expensive. These sharpening stones are made of sedimentary rock and are pretty delicate. You can only use water for them because if you use oil. It will deteriorate the stone. Oil stones are more reliable in strength compared to the Japanese water stones. You can either sharpen knives with water or work with oil. Another kind of wet stone in the market are Arkansas oilstones. These are harvested from the Washita Mountains are well known to last over the years compared to wet stones. The diamond plate is also another kind of wet stone. It is a new material being marketed these days and is made with a metallic place with mono crystalline diamonds encrusted into it.

Don't mistake the idea of the word wet thinking it is because you use water to sharpen the a knife on the surface of the stone. Although this a fact, but it is properly spelled whet because its definition is to sharpen an edge or to hone and stimulate. Whet stone knife sharpening holds true to this meaning because it does need water or oil to sharpen a knife.

If you choose to use a wet stone to sharpening a knife, this is not much of an effort for you because all you need is a repeated back and forth motion of the knife's blade as you hold it against a wet stone. Now doesn't that just sound really easy? It takes a bit of practice and learned technique for you get good results. It always pays to practice with this task if you would like to have the same number of ten fingers on each hand.

Start with making sure your sharpening stone uses top quality materials. Choosing to use inferior materials could lead to ruining a beautiful set of knives. A set of Japanese kitchen knives are quite an expensive investment and you would like to take care of these knives and give them a good long life span of use. Always pick a wet stone that measures the same length as your kitchen knives. Sharpening stones that are shorter than you knives can cause you to get an uneven angle on your knife's edge.

When sharpening with a wet stone, this should be set on a sturdy table using a towel under it to prevent it from slipping. Would you prefer to use water or honing oil with your wet stone? If you are a bit worried of your strokes, you can practice on some glass or ceramic. Keep your strokes on gentle steady rhythm to achieve an even beveled edge. Always let your knife remain in constant contact with the wet stone. Mimic the motion as if you are making stone shavings and stone slivers. Others use a circular motion without putting too much pressure, do remember to use the motion you are most comfortable with.

Should You Try A Homemade Box And Pan Brake?

Build or buy? That is a difficult question to answer for many of us who have tool-intensive hobbies. If you need a box and pan brake to be able to make some parts for a project you are working on, you may have had the thought that you could just build one yourself. Can't be that difficult, right? Maybe - maybe not. But there are other things to consider as well.

Drill Bit Sharpener

I knew a guy once - worked professionally as a luthier. One of the last things he had to do when finishing a violin, was to put in the tuning pegs - made of solid ebony. These need to have a conical shape to stay put in the peg-head, and this is achieved by means of what looks like a giant pencil sharpener. Now, this thing costs around 200 dollars, and when his father (also a luthier) heard that his son had paid that much money for something so simple, he set out to build one for himself. The thing is - he managed to build one in around two days, but he got nothing else done during that time. The big question was - how much was his time worth to him?

Drill Bit Sharpener

How much is your time worth to you? If sheet metal work is your hobby, or you have a hobby which requires you to do sheet metal work from time to time - do you really want to take part of your precious spare-time and devote it to tool-making? For some, the answer is no - given the chance to reflect on it. For others, tool-making can be as much fun as building anything. If you belong to that last group of people, then, by all means, build away!

Lots of people have built their own sheet metal brake because they needed a fast solution for bending sheet metal - but did not feel they could justify buying a sheet metal folder just to make a few bends. Some folks even go as far as building their own cnc-routers to use in their work, but then factory-made cnc-machines can be very expensive indeed, so at least it makes sense from a financial standpoint. But the thing is - a regular sheet metal brake is rather simple. It is, at its most basic, not much more than a vise with a few bells and whistles. A box and pan brake is a bit more complicated - but not much more expensive to buy, than a sheet metal brake - so while you could put the latter together in a few hours, the former might take significantly more work. Why? Because there are more parts, because the functionality is different and because it requires a bit more thinking and planning. In the end you have to decide whether this is something you would enjoy doing, or whether your time is better spent doing something else.

The Story of Snap-On-Tools

Founded in 1920, Snap-On is one of the largest U.S. designers and manufacturers of tools and related equipment. Headquartered in Kenosha, Wisconsin, over 11,500 people are currently employed to design, create, and sell Snap-On products. Since its beginning nearly ninety years ago with one style of socket set, tools bearing the Snap-On name have been used by generations of professionals.

Drill Bit Sharpener

The Snap-On brand began with a set of interchangeable wrench handles and sockets. Designed by Joseph Johnson, who was at that time working for American Grinder Manufacturing, the idea for this set was first rejected by Johnson's boss. Johnson took matters into his own hands, forming the Snap-On company with a co-worker, William Seideman. Along with the first two salesmen, they were the founders of Snap-On Tools. The first set produced included ten sockets with five handles that were completely interchangeable, sold under the catchphrase "Five Do the Work of Fifty." The mechanism for attaching sockets to handles led to the new company's name, "Snap-On."

Drill Bit Sharpener

Besides their unique product, the Snap-On company also set itself apart from its competitors through its direct-marketing approach to tool sales. The first Snap-On tool salesmen brought the tools directly to professional customers' businesses to demonstrate the unique concept. During the 1950s, Snap-On salesmen first began driving fully stocked, walk-in vans. These vans offered the full range of Snap-On products directly to customers.

Snap-On tools are universally agreed to be well designed and well thought out. Each Snap-On tool is crafted with ergonomic handles and other features to make them easy to use for professionals and amateurs alike. Today's full range of Snap-On tools includes hand and power tools, air tools, diagnostic tools, and other tools designed for technicians, mechanics, and others in automotive, woodworking, marine, aviation, and related industries. With more than 19,000 products, the Snap-On catalog ranges from basic socket sets to specialty tools designed for specific uses. Besides their range of tools, Snap-On has secured over half a dozen racing sponsorships.

In addition to tools, Snap-On offers many tool accessories, including tool chests and sharpeners. Their sharpeners include pocket hone sets and other handheld sharpeners that can be used with a wide range of knife and tool blades. Many professionals turn to Snap-On not only for their tools, but also for the products to care for these tools.

Today, Snap-On is recognized as an industry leader, with the highest quality tools available anywhere. Each tool is carefully designed to hold up to rigorous shop use, yet be easy to use for amateurs. All Snap-On tools are covered by a lifetime warranty, so you can be sure they will last no matter what you put them through.

Snap-On is known not only for quality, but also for innovation. Their determination to be the best in the industry has led the Snap-On team to constantly create new products since their original socket set nearly ninety years ago. Many products available today are the result of mechanics' and technicians' input on products that they would like Snap-On to offer. Today, Snap-On holds more than 1,700 active patents worldwide, and each year the company is granted dozens more.

4 Creative Ways To Recycle Your Old Washing Machine

There are millions of old washing machines dumped in different land fills. The number grows every year. And since washers are not exactly made from biodegradable materials, they can take up space on the surface of our planet for a few hundred years.

Drill Bit Sharpener

There are numerous recycling centers that help in the recycling of old appliances. But you can also do simple recycling projects in your home. Here are a few ideas on how to re-use your old washer:

Drill Bit Sharpener

1. Vegetable strainer

One of the most useful parts of the washer is the drum. Notice that the drum has small side holes. You can use this as a vegetable strainer. If you are throwing a huge party and you want to wash vegetables in one go, this is a good choice.

Clean the washer drum first before using it. Dry it up with a clean towel. If there are detergent residues, try sloughing them off using dry baking soda. Baking soda has abrasive particles.

2. Lighted side table

Are you looking for a side table with a modern style? Why don't you make one using the drum of your washer? Remove the protruding parts of the drum. Clean it using baking soda and dry it up. Purchase thick glass with circular shape. Place it on top of the drum. You can also install lighting inside the drum. Drill a hole on the lower part of the drum. Insert the chord of the light. Place the lamp inside the drum before placing the glass.

3. Alternative pot for plants

Instead of using clay pots, you can use the washer drum when planting flowers or vegetables. The drum is large enough to make a good landscape. When you water your plants, some of the water will seep out. The holes on the sides will also allow air to circulate in the roots.

Try planting flowers with large leaves. Arrange them properly. You would want to achieve a rustic style of flower arrangement. Drill one hole on either side of the drum and place wire handles. Hang it up on your patio for additional décor.

4. Lamp

You can use this as a garden lamp or a patio lamp. Just drill a hole on one side of the drum and place lamp inside. You can also add thin Japanese paper to tweak the color of the light. This is a great decoration when you are throwing an outdoor party at night.

Since the diamond is very hard, it is perfect for sharpening and grinding blades, whether it's steel or iron. The industrial diamonds coat the sharpener. This product offers a patented and unique stropping/polishing stage. The edges of knives are longer lasting because of the durable 2-stage sharpening. With its 100% diamond hone, you can be sure that it will not de-temper. The blades of the knife are held at a proper angle through the elastomeric precision spring guides. This is suited to quality knives.

3. DMT W6CP 6-Inch Diamond Whetstone Sharpener - Coarse With Plastic Box

Purchasing Carpenter Tools

Carpenter tools make an idealistic gift for the budding carpenter in your family and it doesn't even need to be their birthday or even Xmas for you to give it to them. These are great gifts for any time and any budding carpenter will love them as would any experienced carpenter.

Drill Bit Sharpener

Just understand what level of carpentry they are at. For I am sure you want to give them something they will use. The only problem with that though is that if you, yourself aren't a carpenter then how do you go about choosing the right tools?

Drill Bit Sharpener

It's not as easy as it might sound, and there are a few things that you should watch out for. The first and number one thing is to watch out for the Unbelievable Bargain. No such thing exists. If it's unbelievable then there's something wrong somewhere. Unless of course they are running some type of clearance. Now if you run across a bargain and it's a well known brand you should snap up the tools immediately. Good carpenter tools at bargain prices are rare, so get them when you can.

Pro woodworkers will know what the good tool brands are and will know when to snatch them up and when to run the other way. In the case of the naive gift purchaser though, I would suggest sticking to something you can be assured of even if it's not at the bargain price you had hoped for. Here especially more than anyplace else, the Latin "Caveat Emptor" holds true, purchasers certainly beware of what you're getting yourself into. Good tools aren't cheap and experience woodworkers know the difference between a good tool and a poor tool. So, don't try to guess and fool them.

Also if you're purchasing the carpenter tools for somebody who's been at it for quite a hefty sum of time then the last thing that you'll want to do will be to give them lower-ranking grade carpenter tools. Something which comes in a set might be good for the novice who is just starting and thus has no clear idea of what they need, but that unquestionably won't do for the experienced carpenter. They need the good tools for several reason and yes one might be for the ego.

These carpenter tools should be of first-class caliber so that the receiver of your gift realizes the time and effort you put into purchasing the perfect carpenter tools for them. For the novice you can purchase them something more sophisticated when they can tell the difference between the tools and when they can feel the difference of holding a good set of carpenter tools in their hands as opposing to the beginner's set you gave them!

But if you have trouble deciding which set of carpenter tools to get ask a friendly sales person for advice and more often than not you'll leave the shop satisfied that you came forth with the real thing. You can also buy a gift card to their favorite tool store. You can certainly know the recipient of the gift will be happy for the first class gift you gave them.

A Swiss Army Knife Is Among The World's Most Versatile Tools

The Swiss army knife has its origins as far back as 1891 when Karl Elsener, who was the owner of a company making surgical implements discovered to his dismay that the pocket knives that were issued to the Swiss army were, in fact, made in Germany. Elsener decided that these knives should be made in Switzerland by the Swiss. He obtained the contract and started producing the current Modell 1890 knives towards the close of 1891. It was not too long before people discovered the versatility of a Swiss army knife.

Drill Bit Sharpener

The model numbers of the knives refer to the year the knife was introduced. The original Modell (German spelling) 1890 was issued to the Swiss army ostensibly to assist the soldiers to open their food cans and to take apart their Schmidt-Rubin rifles. This knife had a can-opener, blade, screwdriver and a reamer. The grips were a dark-colored oak wood that was changed to ebony at a later stage.

Drill Bit Sharpener

At the end of World War II, US soldiers were able to buy the knives at their PX stores in military camps, but because they could not say Schweizer Offiziersmesser, which is what the knives were known as then, they started calling them Swiss Army Knives and the name stuck and was adopted throughout the world. The Swiss Army designation has been registered as a trademark by Victorinox and its related companies involved in the manufacture of the knives.

Recognized throughout the world with their red handles, white crosses, a few blades and several fold-out tools, the Swiss army knife is used by campers, fishermen, hunters, and in fact by anyone who requires a certain set of tools for a multitude of jobs. A vast array of designs is available for almost any activity, from the smaller models having only one blade, a combination can-opener bottle opener, a reamer and a screwdriver to the Giant, which is nine inches wide and boasts 87 different tools and can perform 141 different functions.

The knives are produced by Victorinox and its subsidiary, Wenger, and one of their most popular knives is the Classic Knife measuring just three inches long and offering great strength without the bulk. This knife sports a keyring, enabling it to be carried on a key chain for convenience. Among the range of tools available on this small wonder, are small blades, a toothpick, tweezers, nail files, scissors, various screwdriver heads and a host of other tools that may never be needed but that are there if they are needed.

The knives have been propelled into the twenty-first century by the introduction of the Presentation Master, a futuristic design which features a laser pointer, memory stick and fingerprint scanner that has built-in data encryption. All the features of the knife including the laser pointer and data storage drives may be folded away or can be pulled inside the knife on springs while not being used. Because it has no blades, this device may be carried onto aircraft.

Extending the range, knives such as the Champion Plus are fitted with such tools as a small saw with serrated blade, fish scaler, hook remover, punch tool, reamer and many more. A waterproof pouch is available as well as a leather belt pouch enabling the knife to be carried on the person.

The knives may be sharpened using either steel or a whetstone, although Victorinox recommend using the steel and, in fact manufacture a knife sharpener, precisely for this purpose. With so many uses, the versatility of a Swiss army knife can not be disputed.
